Ashley Dus
JD College of Law 2016
Associate at Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth

Ashley Dus (‘16) loves combining her passion for the law with her curiosity for medicine. As a student at Illinois Law, Dus served as the editor-in-chief of The Elder Law Journal, a teaching assistant for both legal writing and advocacy, and as a student attorney for legal clinics. Because of her success as a law student, Dus was able to earn a summer position at the firm of Donohue Brown Mathewson & Smyth in Chicago where she began her career as a healthcare attorney. Dus’s efforts during her summer at Donohue Brown enabled her to become an associate at the firm upon graduating.

Dus now focuses her practice on professional negligence and product liability. She is a litigator, and claims that Donohue Brown has allowed her to gain copious amounts of experience in that practice. She is regularly in court and expressed that she loves being able to hone her skills as a litigator on a daily basis. These skills enable her to effectively advocate for her clients, who are often physicians.

Dus shared how rewarding it is to defend doctors from malpractice suits. Oftentimes, more than monetary damages are at stake for the physicians. Their reputation and pride are also on the line.

For students, having access to alumni mentors like Dus is invaluable. A group of students who had the opportunity to meet with her enjoyed learning from her and left with greater knowledge as to what the responsibilities of a healthcare litigator entail.
